Glutathione is present in most tissues, with especially high concentrations in the liver. It also serves as a cofactor for some enzymes and helps transport amino acids across cell membranes. In plants and microorganisms, glutathione contributes to stress responses and metal handling. The molecule is synthesized in two ATP-dependent steps, first producing gamma-glutamylcysteine and then adding glycine. Because cysteine availability often limits synthesis, dietary and metabolic factors can influence glutathione levels. Research continues to examine how these levels relate to health and disease.
Glutathione is a tripeptide composed of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. The peptide bond between glutamate and cysteine uses the gamma-carboxyl group of glutamate rather than the alpha-carboxyl group. This unusual linkage protects the molecule from many common peptidases. The cysteine side chain carries a thiol group that can undergo reversible oxidation. Because of this thiol, glutathione participates in redox reactions and helps maintain the reducing environment inside most cells in living systems.
Biosynthesis occurs in two ATP-dependent steps. The enzyme glutamate-cysteine ligase joins glutamate and cysteine, forming gamma-glutamylcysteine; glutathione synthetase then adds glycine to produce the complete tripeptide. Because the peptide bond from glutamate uses the gamma-carboxyl group, glutathione resists digestion by many ordinary peptidases. Tissues vary in synthesis capacity, and the liver generally contains high concentrations relative to many other organs. This uneven distribution contributes to organ-specific differences in redox buffering and affects how experimental results are interpreted across tissue types.
Glutathione participates in detoxification reactions, amino acid transport, and the maintenance of protein thiols. It serves as a cofactor for several enzymes, including glutathione peroxidases and glutathione S-transferases. In research literature, altered glutathione status appears in studies of aging, infection, metabolic stress, and environmental exposure. Whether low glutathione is a cause, consequence, or marker of such conditions often remains unresolved. Direct measurement in blood or tissue provides a snapshot, but results depend on sample handling, timing, and the method used.

Dyson proposed that an immortal group of intelligent beings could escape the prospect of heat death by extending time to infinity while expending only a finite amount of energy. This is also known as the Dyson scenario.
== Treatment == The best known treatment is recommending frequent, small meals and to avoid simple sugars. Sulfhydryl group-containing drugs should be avoided and steroids can be used in resistant cases.
A meat substitute, also called a meat analogue, approximates certain aesthetic qualities (primarily texture, flavor and appearance) or chemical characteristics of a specific meat. Substitutes are often based on soybeans (such as tofu and tempeh), gluten, or peas. Whole legumes are often used as a protein source in vegetarian dishes, but are not listed here.
Buc-ee's Holdings, Inc., is an American chain of travel centers. It was founded and is owned by Arch "Beaver" Aplin III, and is headquartered in Lake Jackson, Texas, a city south of Houston. The chain was founded in 1982 in Clute, next to Lake Jackson, and established its first travel center in Luling, south of Austin, Texas, in 2003. The company began expanding outside Texas in 2018 with a location in Baldwin County, Alabama, and has since opened stores in 10 states, with plans to open new locations in 10 more. The company has developed a cult following. Buc-ee's has stated that its parking lots and driveways are not designed to accommodate 18-wheelers, and it has never permitted the trucks at its locations. This policy has angered some truck drivers.

Lebanon's health minister Firas Abiad stated the attacks were war crimes and part of Israel's systematic targeting of Lebanon's healthcare system. A November 2024 investigation found Israel had struck in "lethal proximity" to nineteen different hospitals in Lebanon.
EPA proposed a legal limit of a maximum of 3.5 millisieverts (350 millirem) each annually to local individuals after 10,000 years, which would be up to several percent of the exposure currently received by some populations in the highest natural background regions on Earth, though the United States Department of Energy (DOE) predicted that received dose would be much below that limit. Over a timeframe of thousands of years, after the most active short half-life radioisotopes decayed, burying U.S. nuclear waste would increase the radioactivity in the top 2000 feet of rock and soil in the United States (10 million km2) by approximately 1 part in 10 million over the cumulative amount of natural radioisotopes in such a volume, but the vicinity of the site would have a far higher concentration of artificial radioisotopes underground than such an average.
Structurally, insulin icodec consists of two peptide chains connected by a disulfide bridge, similar to insulin. However, it includes a C20 fatty diacid-containing side chain to enable strong, reversible albumin binding. Additionally, three amino acid substitutions enhance molecular stability, reduce insulin receptor binding, and slow clearance, collectively extending its duration of action. Insulin icodec received approval for medical use in Canada in March 2024. In the same month, the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) issued a positive opinion, recommending marketing authorization for insulin icodec. Subsequently, insulin icodec was approved for medical use in the European Union in May 2024. Insulin icodec is currently marketed by Novo Nordisk under the name Awiqli (pronounced A-week-ly).
==== History ==== It was founded in March 1979 as part of the People's Liberation Army Basic Engineering Corps. It was under the joint dual command of the Basic Engineering Corps and the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry. It consisted of 7 regiment level battalions and 12 geological teams. The Gold Corps was handed to the PAP in January 1985. After 1985, it went under the dual control of the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry and Ministry of Public Security. Its role in this time was to do geological surveys for gold mining. After February 1999, it went under the dual control of the People's Armed Police and the State Economic and Trade Commission. Its official duties were: finding gold deposits, providing security and law enforcement to gold mines, mining gold and preventing conflict near gold mines. By 2011, the gold corps had mined 1800 tonnes of gold. The same year in December, its official role switched again to geological surveying and metal analysis along with disaster relief to geological related incidents and law enforcement. In 2016, its role was switched yet again to focus primarily on military geology related work in the Deepening National Defense and Military Reform. In 2018, the Gold Corps was disbanded and its personnel were handed to the Ministry of Natural Resources, the China Geological Survey and the China National Gold Group Corporation.

Glutathione is a tripeptide made from glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. Its cysteine residue provides a thiol group that is central to its redox activity. The glutamate-cysteine bond forms through the gamma-carboxyl group of glutamate.
Reduced glutathione, GSH, can donate electrons and become oxidized to GSSG. The balance between these forms reflects the cell's redox environment. A shift toward GSSG is commonly interpreted as evidence of oxidative stress, though the ratio can vary by tissue and method.
Glutathione occurs in nearly all cell types, with notable amounts in the liver. It is also present in the lungs, kidneys, and red blood cells. Concentrations differ among tissues and change with age, diet, and disease states.
GSH is the reduced form of glutathione, with a free thiol group on cysteine. GSSG is the oxidized disulfide form, created when two GSH molecules become linked. The two forms exist together, and their balance is often reported as the GSH/GSSG ratio in laboratory studies.
